Player's Name: Chii Other Characters: Garnet & Juliet Contacts: PM my admin account or see me in the cbox (Jhuldra) Random Fact: I didn't drink soda for about 6 years.
Name: Sylphen Elliot Harlow Alias: Sylph (Which has been the subject of mockery due to it being an unusual name); Duke Harlow Age: 21 Birthday: August 10 Gender: Male Species: Human Social Class: Nobility Job/Position: He ranks as a Duke. Sexual Preference: No preference, but he is expected to marry and carry on his family name, being the last of his bloodline.
Hair: Very curly and naturally a dirty blonde. It's a pain for him to try to tame, so he usually doesn't bother. Eyes: Blue. Height: 6'2" Weight: 165 lbs.
Sylph is a very secretive person. He doesn't share facts about his past or try to relate to others. However, despite this, people seem to know his name. He is a Duke with a very large estate, and his name carries with it power. Although he frequents the London social scene and has made friends there, no one knows much about who he is. He prefers listening to talking and prefers books to people. He is not mean, but he has came off as cold and distant more than once, as he can often appear disinterested.
He enjoys the finer things in life and spares no expense in purchasing what he feels is the best. And while he does not intentionally show it off, it is a well known fact that he has no qualms with money; the estimated value of his estate among the members of noble society is meager compared to what it actually is.
Some rumors spread about him make him out to be a terrible person. Connections with the black market, hiring assassins, and helping to cover up political conspiracies are all things that have been said about them, but they hold little truth. It is true that his butler is trained in combat, but he has never had to use protective measure. He has bought from the black market in order to restore items to England's museum, though he has kept a few items for his personal collection.
He seems to care more about his art and interests than he does spending time with people, which could be why he hasn't found himself a wife yet. In truth, he has never found someone to inspire him, and seeing his parents so happily paired makes him hold out hopes that he, too, can find that sort of romance.
Internally, he is damaged. His family's death has struck him deeply and often consumes his thoughts. Rooms in his manor have had to be repaired multiple times due to his fits of rage where he'll throw a chair or table into a wall, punch a mirror, and other such things. He has nightmares and the occasional hallucination. His staff is loyal and has stayed with him, and most have come to recognize when there should be an intervention or if he should be left alone. Because he is never violent towards people, they realize that the most danger he poses is to himself.
Sylph's parents were of the interesting variety. They were very eccentric and enjoyed travelling immensely. Sylph was born in the Ottoman Empire, in fact, and has spent many months there in the family's home. His father was fascinated by ruins and dig sites and often participated in them, as his financial situation allowed him great freedom to do as he pleased without worrying about earning any sort of money. His mother was a well-versed woman who enjoyed immersing herself in other cultures and had a love for all things Homer and Greece.
His name "Sylphen" was a combination of his parents' decision to give their son a unique name that would make him be remembered. Of course, his middle name was much more typical: Elliot. Perhaps they were giving him a way out of the odd looks his first name would bring. But whatever the cause, Sylph was given his name, and he has never regretted the odd looks he has gotten by introducing himself.
Regardless, Sylph's childhood was quite marvelous. He was tutored in several languages as well as the arts and literature. His father was quick to teach him in the ways of politics, and while he never really had "time to himself" and did not go out and play with the other children, he had a very happy childhood. He often found he had little in common with his peers at the time and preferred to attempt deep psychological discussions with those older than himself.
His younger brother, Izram, was born in late June shortly before Sylph was supposed to turn eleven. However, he died a few days later in his crib. His mother, overcome with grief and weakened from childbirth, succumbed to one of the first cases of cholera in the small village in India they were staying in. But she was only the first- not the last. As it swept through the town, it claimed the lives of most of the villagers, and Sylph and his father were left running for the hills with the survivors. It seemed that they would both escape alive, but his father was claimed as one of the last victims of the outbreak.
All three corpses were transported back to England along with the orphaned Sylph. However, his parents had left everything to him, being the oldest (and now only) son. He buried his parents and had the sympathy of his fellow nobility. The household staff was well equipped to help him and recognized him immediately as their lord. He was never left truly alone, though he isolated himself from society for quite a few years due to the sudden death of his parents.
Sylph continued his studies and worked towards becoming the son his parents had always wanted. In a way, he hoped that he would make them proud. He didn't re-enter the London social scene until seven years later. He had spent most of his time traveling and doing the things his parents had told him about. He had continued with his studies and grown to have quite the same fondness as his parents did for traveling and literature, except he paid very close detail to the arts.
His patronage into the art world began not a year after he had been accepted into the noble circle as one of their own. He purchased a portrait from the marketplace for a much higher price than the artist had been charging and hung it in his estate. When he and his gentlemen friends had been talking, one noticed it and asked for the artist name. Within a few weeks, the artist had steams of commissions and requests, leading to his name being spoken throughout all of London's finest. This same scene had repeated itself a few times, and Sylph has come to be known as a very powerful ally for a struggling artist to have.
It's a well-known fact that if he discovers you, you can count on a career. That said, he is extremely picky and does not give "hand-outs" to anyone. He also helps finance the theatre, library, and museum- often buying relics from dig sites and having them placed in the museum before they are bought and sold on the black market. He also gives money to the church in order to help take care of the sick and weak that can afford no better place to stay. He does believe in some sorts of charity, as his parents before him did.
Currently, Sylph is expected to take place in London's season, trying to find a young bride to birth him and heir and take care of the home. However, he is currently uninterested in romance and enjoys his life as it is. He does not want all of his family's estate to fall back to the crown, but he doesn't want to marry someone he is not in love with.
