Hair: Black and scruffy, ends at the nape of his neck. Slight wave. Eyes: brown Height: 6’4” Weight: 175 lbs
Many people consider Mukraam to be one of the meanest people they’ve ever met. He has an extremely volatile temper which leads him to a lot of fights, which have only been stopped by his sister so far. He’s crass and abrasive and generally lacking in people skills.
Despite his brusque demeanor, Mukraam has a strong moral center. He would never hurt a woman or a child and treats women with more respect than he can muster for anyone else. He refuses to drink or eat pork and, of course, no carnal acts until he is married and only then with his wife. However, this has led him to be slightly uncomfortable around women, especially as a doctor – he feels touching a woman to whom he isn’t married is wrong, even if it’s for his job.
His religion is very important, almost a crutch for him. When he feels he has nowhere else to turn or needs guidance for anything, he relies on the Qu’ran for answers. When there are no answers to be found, he can feel lost and may lash out.
Mukraam is racist and prejudiced. He can’t stand the British, nor anyone from a religion outside of Islam, though he is more accepting of women than men. His practice suffers sometimes because when he’s in a particularly bad mood, he’ll refuse non-Muslim patients, which happens to be most of his patients.
Mukraam was born in Srinagar, Kashmir in India. He had a brother who was two years older than him, Sulayman, and a younger sister, Hasina, who was born three years after him. His family was quite well off – his father a politician and his mother a housewife. His family was rather conservative in their religious views, but it wasn’t unusual in the region he lived in.
Unfortunately, Kashmir always had a fair share of skirmishes – sometimes between religions, and in the 19th century, many times with the British as it tried to expand its Indian territories northward. When Mukraam was five, one such skirmish between the British and Indians resulted in the death of his older brother. Mukraam, who was with his brother at the time, never stopped feeling survivor’s guilt and never stopped hating the English for it.
Mukraam grew up a bitter child with severe anger issues – constantly in trouble for fights with other children and attempts at vandalism. As he grew older, it only grew worse. He was sent to an English boarding school in central India, though he barely spoke English, where he was disciplined heavily for his misbehavior and beaten whenever he spoke Hindi. This only made him more resentful of the British.
Mukraam managed to graduate, only by the influence of his father – otherwise he would have been expelled long before. His father pressured him to choose a vocation – either a teacher or a doctor, he was told.
So Mukraam attended medical school in British-occupied India. However, after finishing his medical degree and hoping to go back home to Kashmir, his family informed him they were moving to England so that Mukraam could make more money with his medical degree and his father could get a higher paying job as an attaché.
Despite the whole idea sounding like a nightmare come to life for Mukraam, he followed his family to England out of obligation and because his family was really all he had.
